About Brushless DC Electrical Medical Motors
As the medical industry innovates to provide improved patient care, brushless DC motors evolve to keep up with the industry.
Brushless DC electric motor features provide significant benefits that are pivotal to the medical industry. Brushless DC electric motors do not use brushes like a brushed motor. They eliminate the need for brushes to deliver current to the coils on the rotor through the commutator because the coils are fixed on the stator, and do not rotate on the rotor.
Benefits of Brushless DC Electrical Medical Motors
Brushless DC electric medical motors offer various benefits, including:
- Lifespan. Brushless DC motors have a longer lifespan than brushed motors because there is no wear from the brushes interacting with the commutator. Brushless DC motors offer around 20,000 hours of reliable service, while the average brushed DC motor manages between 1,000 and 3,000 hours.
- Output Speed. Brushless DC motors offer a high output speed, up to six times faster than a comparable brushed DC motor. This is due to the reduced speed discrepancies between the rotor speed and the revolving magnetic speed of the stator. Brushless DC motors also prevent slip and heat or power losses.
- Precision. DC motors offer immediate starting, stopping, and reversing capabilities with equipment. Permanent magnet DC motors offer improved precision and are preferred for motion control applications.
- Reduced Operating and Maintenance Costs. Brushless DC electric motors have a higher initial cost than brushed motors because their controllers must supply a voltage sequence between three phases. However, they require virtually zero maintenance and a significantly longer product lifespan.
- Efficiency. While brushed motors offer 75% to 80% efficiency, brushless DC motors offer up to 90% efficiency in operations. The brushless DC motor’s design prevents contact with the commutator and reduces friction, minimizing energy loss caused by heat.
- Size. Brushless motors are more compact, even with electronic controllers. A brushless DC motor’s design reduces the size and weight of the motor, allowing for lighter motor-powered medical devices that can deliver the same power.
- Torque and Control. Brushless DC motors offer a high torque-to-weight ratio for increased torque per watt of power input. While brushed DC motors deliver reduced torque as the speed increases, the computer-controlled electric current in brushless DC motors maintains precise control.
Applications
Due to their ability to withstand multiple cycles of the Sterilization Process in an Autoclave, our brushless DC electrical motors are used in a range of medical applications, including:
- Large, Medium and Small Bone Surgical Power Tools (Battery Operated and Corded)
- Orthopedic Shavers
- Handheld, Pneumatic Drills
